ART DIRECTION

To start the project, I worked with the Art Direction team to develop a concept to form the guidelines of the project. After many brainstorming sessions, we decided to portray Madison Theater’s iconic history – from a silent movie house, to the fire of 1944, to imagery of music from the 50s- 90s, and finally the bright future of the theater. I created storyboards that the rest of the teams would follow to create their scenes for the video. I created rough images in Illustrator for the teams to follow.

DIGITAL RENDERING

Next, I transitioned to the Digital Rendering team to help create visuals and animations for the video. I created the sun and stained glass to end the video, which symbolized the bright future of the Madison Theater. This also became a primary visual for the project – for promotion of the team’s work in different marketing efforts. I used Illustrator to create the sun and AfterEffects to animate it.

ZOETROPES

I also worked with an animator to create zoetropes that slide across the building. I created frame-by-frame vectors that would look like rolling zoetropes when put together. I used Illustrator to create all the assets. These show Madison Theater’s history as a silent movie house and the intricate patterns honor the original interior of the building before it was burnt down in the fire.

LOBBY CHARACTERS

Finally, I created frame by frame vectors for the lobby characters. I used Illustrator to make these, then a animator combined everything in Adobe AfterEffects. They honor the theater’s beginnings in color and sound.

FINAL VIDEO

The final video was displayed at BLINK Cincinnati, the nation’s largest public art festival. BLINK transforms Cincinnati into a immersive experience of projection mapping, light, interactive installations, and murals.
